EPLO BROWN BAG LUNCH EVENT – Looking towards Burundi’s future: how to build peace and navigate the “new normal”?

13th June 2017 @ 13:00 - 14:00 CEST

The 2015 electoral season in Burundi saw protests, violence and open political conflict at the local level, with a particular concentration in Bujumbura. In 2016, the country settled into a “new normal” characterised by low-level insecurity with regular disappearances, arrests and imprisonments, as well as severely restricted freedom of expression. This context has evolved against the backdrop of fragile yet resilient ethnic relations and a failing economy, creating high risk for future conflicts and violence. The situation is made even more precarious by a lack of progress in high-level political negotiations, which has increased the risk of armed mobilisation.

Floride Ahitungiye is Search for Common Ground’s (SfCG) Country Director in Burundi. She will provide her analysis of the evolving conflict dynamics and current peacebuilding priorities. She will also give an overview of SfCG’s inclusive approach, and provide a number of policy recommendations to the international community, including the EU.

Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch and EPLO will provide tea and coffee.

Please note that seats are limited and registration is mandatory. Please RSVP to Lorenzo Conti if you would like to participate.
