EPLO BROWN BAG LUNCH EVENT – Peacebuilding and the road to EU integration for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: A women human rights defenders’ perspective

6th November 2018 @ 13:00 - 14:00 CET

With a new reform-oriented government in place since May 2017, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (hereafter Macedonia) has emerged from its most severe political crisis of the last two decades. With democratic checks and balances being progressively restored, Macedonia seems to be on the right reform path. Cautious steps towards reconciliation with Greece are being taken, new and more inclusive legislation on minority languages has been adopted, the climate for civil society is generally improving and there are increasing numbers of women in the government and institutions. In April 2018, in light of the progress achieved, the European Commission recommended that the Council of the European Union open accession negotiations with Macedonia.

In this Brown Bag Lunch discussion, women human rights defenders from Macedonia will share their insights on key developments and challenges on their country’s path towards EU membership. The discussion will provide an opportunity for participants to explore ways in which the EU accession policy can contribute to building peaceful societies, securing the rights of women and minorities and protecting space for civil society.

The speakers will be Irena Cvetkovic from Coalition Margins and Sneshka Ilikj from Reactor – Research in Action.

Please RSVP to Lorenzo Conti to attend this event.
