EPLO Brown Bag Lunch Event – Second Karabakh War: One Year On – Gendered Elements of Rehabilitation and Recovery

9th December 2021 @ 13:00 - 14:00 CET

One year since the Second Karabakh War, numerous questions and unresolved challenges remain, both for Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as for Georgia and the entire region. The conflict has precipitated (geo)political, social, and economic change and left much uncertainty in its wake. The interplay of Russian, Turkish, and Iranian factors on this chessboard complicates the solutions and raises more questions than answers, especially in relation to human security in the region.

Increased militarisation and far-right/ultranationalist narratives, also fuelled by the Covid-19 pandemic, have contributed to increased security concerns for women peacebuilders and human rights defenders, and further reduced civic space. The conflict has resulted in large numbers of displaced people, especially women and children, creating a housing crisis, uncertainties in terms of post-war benefits, intra-community tensions, security concerns, mobility restrictions, and challenges in terms of access to employment, education, and healthcare, especially sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Women’s political and socio-economic participation has been severely impacted.

The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation has supported dialogue and cross-context initiatives for at least a decade and has continued doing so through a ‘Do No Harm approach’ in the post-war period.

In this Brown Bag Lunch discussion, Ekaterine Gamakharia, Head of the Women’s Fund “Sukhumi’s” Representative office in Tbilisi; Pervana Mammadova, feminist peace activist, cross-cultural coach, and non-formal education trainer; and Knarik Mkrtchyan, women’s human rights defender, peace activist and Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation Local Coordinator; will share their analysis and recommendations based on recent studies among target communities, including gender-responsive early warning systems, and discuss further ways forward, as well as the EU’s role in supporting confidence building and conflict transformation efforts.

Please note that registration is mandatory. If you would like to participate, please register on this page.
