EPLO BROWN BAG LUNCH EVENT – Shrinking space for civil society in the Western Balkans: a perspective from women’s rights organisations

26th April 2017 @ 12:30 - 13:30 CEST

Civil society, including women’s organisations, is at the forefront of efforts to build peaceful and prosperous societies. Their activity in the Western Balkans is, however, undermined by serious political, security and financial challenges, and governments’ attempts to discredit and weaken those civil society organisations which criticise them is a particularly worrying trend.

A delegation of representatives of women’s organisations from the countries in the Western Balkans will share their insights on the current challenges faced by civil society overall and women’s organisations in particular. The discussion will provide an opportunity for participants and speakers to explore ways in which the EU’s enlargement policies and financial support could increase space for civil society and thus promote positive and long-lasting developments in the region.

The speakers include two women human rights defender from the National Network to End Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (Voice Against Violence) (Macedonia) and Rights for All (Bosnia and Herzegovina) respectively.

Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch and EPLO will provide tea and coffee.

Kindly note that places are limited and registration is mandatory. RSVP to Lorenzo Conti if you would like to participate.
