EPLO MEMBER ORGANISATION EVENT – Inside the Sieges: The Scope and Implications of Besieged Syria

16th February 2016 @ 15:00 - 16:30 CET

The images of emaciated children in the besieged Syrian town of Madaya drew international attention in January 2016. However, more than a million Syrians remain under siege, and the unanswered demand to lift them, stipulated in UN Security Council resolution 2254, threatens to derail the resumption of Syria peace talks in Geneva. Key international leaders’ calls for implementation of the resolution have not resulted in access to besieged areas.

On 16 February 2016, please join PAX and The Syria Institute for an exchange on the scope, scale, and policy implications of the ongoing siege crisis.

Husam Rajab Fawar, having lived under siege himself, will share his experiences as a volunteer with the Syrian Red Crescent in the besieged Damascus suburb of Douma. Valerie Szybala (The Syria Institute) will present the findings of the newly released Siege Watch report that indicates there are well over 1 million Syrians under siege in Syria, and that the Syrian government and its allies are the main parties besieging civilian populations. Marjolein Wijninckx (PAX) will examine the implications of the sieges.

This event takes place in the framework of the Siege Watch project.

To register, please send an email to Astrid Schrama by Monday 15 February noon the latest.
