EPLO Member Organisation Event – M&E Thursday Talks – Sri Lanka’s Community Memorialization Project

15th August 2019 @ 16:00 - 17:00 CEST

Join DME for Peace next Thursday, 15 August, as Radhika Hetti, Researcher and Curator of The Herstories Project, joins the M&E Thursday Talks to lead a discussion on “Memorialization: Lessons Learned from Sri Lanka.”

Radhika Hetti will share lessons learned from developing and implementing the Community Memorialization Project, which is a joint project between Search for Common Ground Sri Lanka and the Herstories Project. This project uses verbal and non-verbal forms of expression to collect, archive, and use people’s histories for non-recurrence of violence. This exhibition has been used to create a public discourse at the grassroots levels in Sri Lanka and abroad.

The Sri Lankan experience of memorialization can lend some insight into some of the following questions: Can a memory project move from an archival product to a process that uses documented narratives to contribute to justice and peace? Through memorialization can we create a public discourse on non-recurrence of violence for Sri Lankans still emerging from a culture of violence? Hetti will explore these questions and more in our discussion.
