Sarah Rapucci will lead a discussion on the relationship between media and democracy. Rapucci will take a deep-dive into Freedom House’s recent report, “Freedom and the Media 2019: A Downward Spiral,” exploring how freedom of the media has been deteriorating around the world over the past decade.

The report finds that in democracies and authoritarian states alike, in an attempt to consolidate power, leaders are finding new ways to repress independent journalism. However, Rapucci will also discuss how experience has shown that press freedom can rebound from even lengthy stints of repression when given the opportunity.
