OTHER EVENT – Preventing election related violence: What Role for Political Mediation and Dialogue

13th July 2017 @ 09:00 - 12:00 CEST

The European Parliament’s Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) is hosting a seminar entitled ‘Preventing election related Violence: What Role for Political Mediation and Dialogue’ in co-operation with the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES), the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European Institute of Peace (EIP) and the European Peacebuilding Liaison Office (EPLO). The seminar will also include the launch of the ECES comprehensive conflict prevention and management handbook with contributions and participants from 14 Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.

The elections in Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and even the United States, as well as the upcoming elections in Kenya demonstrate how high-stake elections frequently trigger anxiety, tension, or even violence against voters or candidates. Practitioners possess a variety of possible interventions to keep the peace at the polls in particular mediation and political dialogue. Addressing and understanding the role of both political dialogue and mediation is of key importance. What works, what does not, and under which conditions mediation and political dialogue can be promoted to mitigate electoral related violence?

The half-day seminar is a follow-up to the symposium ‘Electing Peace – What Works In Preventing Election Violence?’ held in November 2016. That symposium brought both the election observation and conflict prevention communities of experts together to discuss a common concern and highlighted the increasingly shared view about the causes and risks of election-related violence as well as how the instruments available to both approaches (EOMs, Needs Assessments, Expert and Follow-up missions, Early warning, Communication, political dialogue and mediation) could be used in more complementary ways. On 13 July, we will follow up on this theme looking at practical ways to improve overall EU and international efforts to mitigate election related violence.

Kindly submit your RSVP to the European Parliamentary Mediation Support (epms@europarl.europa.eu).
