Key-note speaker: Mr Rüdiger KÖNIG
Director-General for Crisis Prevention, Stabilisation, Post-Conflict
Management and Humanitarian Assistance, German Federal
Foreign Office
Moderator: Ms Sonya REINES-DJIVANIDES
Executive Director, European Peacebuilding Liaison Office (EPLO)
Since the publication of the EU Global Strategy in 2016 the conceptual framework for the EU’s approach to external conflicts and crises has been further elaborated. However, implementation
by actors in Brussels and on the ground remains challenging, despite general buy-in to the Integrated Approach and the (triple) Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus. Europe’s engagement in current crisis situations such as in the Sahel, in Sudan, in Afghanistan and in Venezuela remains rather ad-hoc and with a clear need to enhance and support crisis prevention
and conflict resolution efforts of the EU, Member States and civil society actors.
With Germany taking over the EU Presidency in July 2020, Mr Rüdiger König will discuss the Federal Government’s experience with translating its 2017 Guidelines “Preventing Crises, Resolving Conflicts, Promoting Peace” into the recently adopted strategies on Security Sector Reform, Rule of Law promotion, Transitional Justice, and Mediation and how they can contribute to moving Europe’s crisis engagement to the next level.
