Geographic Meeting on climate and security in Somalia

On Wednesday, 3 July 2024, an online event explored the links between climate change and security dynamics in Somalia, one of the most climate-vulnerable countries. Somalia faced severe natural disasters like droughts, floods, and locust infestations, which disrupted livelihoods and fueled resource-based conflicts. Climate change acted as a “threat multiplier,” worsening violence, famine, and displacement. The EU recognized these challenges and committed to green transition efforts through policies like the Climate-Security Nexus and the Somalia-EU Joint Operational Roadmap. The EU supported state-building, economic growth, and resilience in Somalia, focusing on green energy and agriculture, despite challenges such as poverty, weak governance, and fragile security.
