The Green Transition and Peace: good practices and opportunities for sustainable outcomes

This Civil Society Dialogue Network (CSDN) meeting, organised by EPLO in cooperation with the European Commission and the European External Action Service, took place on 12 March 2024. It brought together 37 participants, including 25 civil society experts and 12 officials from EU institutions and the European Defence Agency. The objective was to gather input on how EU efforts related to the green transition and climate adaptation in external action can be designed in a conflict-sensitive way and contribute to peace.

Participants discussed how climate adaptation, environmental protection and natural resource management can create opportunities for dialogue and cooperation in fragile and conflict-affected contexts. Discussions examined cross-sectoral approaches linking climate action with peacebuilding tools, conflict analysis and inclusive governance.

The meeting also explored issues such as renewable energy projects, critical raw materials, climate finance and partnerships with civil society and the private sector. Participants reflected on how EU policies and investments related to the green transition can address conflict risks, support inclusive decision-making and strengthen cooperation across sectors and governance levels.
