Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support in Transitional Justice

Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support in Transitional Justice: gathering input from experts

This Civil Society Dialogue Network (CSDN) policy meeting gathered civil society experts to discuss the integration of mental health and psycho-social support (MHPSS) into transitional justice processes. Organised by EPLO in cooperation with the European Commission and the European External Action Service, the meeting aimed to provide input for future EU operational guidelines on this topic. It brought together 28 civil society participants and two officials from the European Commission.

Participants discussed how MHPSS can be incorporated into transitional justice processes from the design stage. Discussions addressed the role of victim participation, the importance of long-term support structures, and the need to consider the broader social environment affected by violence and trauma.

The meeting also examined context-specific approaches to trauma, gender considerations, and the importance of adapting support mechanisms to local cultural practices. Participants reflected on community-based healing approaches, support for professionals working with trauma, and possible ways for the EU to strengthen MHPSS integration in transitional justice initiatives.
