CMI – Brown Bag on Sudan with CMI Sudan Team

On Thursday 22 May, CMI, in co-organization with EPLO, hosted an informal lunch discussion with Sir Nicholas Kay, CMI Senior Advisor, Sylvia Thomson, Senior Manager and Amir Salim, Advisor.

The war in Sudan erupted on 15 April 2023, when a power struggle between two rival factions of the military government turned into an open conflict. Two years on, the war has had a devastating impact amid international inattention and inaction. Tens of thousands have been killed and millions have fled the country, while the humanitarian crisis is worsening and the fighting is escalating.

CMI has been engaged in Sudan since 2020, initially supporting efforts related to a democratic transition and a broader peace process in the country, while addressing root causes to the conflict in Sudan, as well as women’s meaningful participation. Since April 2023, CMI’s work in Sudan has focused on building trust, consensus and capacities among political groups, around key issues related to a ceasefire agreement and the resumption of a political process, in support of ongoing multilateral mediation efforts.

EPLO and CMI hosted an informal discussion on the current challenges and opportunities for peacemaking in Sudan. Drawing on CMI’s experience in the region, this exchange aimed to foster peer dialogue on Sudan, focusing on lessons learned and potential ways forward. While Sudan remains a priority for the EU in Africa, it requires both greater attention and increased support from the EU and the international community at large.
