The Green Transition and Peace: exploring climate crisis and security dynamics in Somalia

This Civil Society Dialogue Network (CSDN) meeting, organised by EPLO in cooperation with the European Commission and the European External Action Service, took place on 3 July 2024. It brought together 24 participants, including 16 civil society experts and 8 EU officials. The meeting aimed to explore how EU climate action in Somalia may affect local peace and conflict dynamics and how green transition initiatives can contribute to conflict prevention.

Participants discussed the relationship between climate change, environmental degradation and security dynamics in Somalia. Discussions examined how climate projects, infrastructure development and environmental interventions may influence tensions between communities and different local actors.

The meeting also addressed issues such as deforestation, resource competition, water management and access to energy. Participants reflected on the role of local civil society, community participation and capacity-building, as well as the importance of conflict-sensitive programming and locally led initiatives when designing climate and development interventions in Somalia.
