Following the European Parliament elections, EPLO has addressed a letter to newly elected Members of the European Parliament outlining key priorities for strengthening the European Union’s role as a global actor for peace.
The EU has long positioned itself as a project built on cooperation and peaceful conflict resolution. Yet today’s international landscape presents increasingly complex challenges, ranging from geopolitical tensions to shrinking civic space and rising military-focused narratives. In this context, strengthening the EU’s peacebuilding capacities remains essential.
The letter identifies four areas where parliamentary leadership can make a difference: ensuring adequate funding for peacebuilding and gender equality, reinforcing partnerships with civil society, supporting mediation and conflict prevention tools, and integrating peacebuilding considerations across the EU’s external policies. By placing these priorities at the centre of EU external action, the European Parliament can help advance sustainable peace worldwide.
