EPLO Brown Bag Lunch Event – An alternative security framework

8th February 2023 @ 12:30 - 13:30 CET

Security discourses have traditionally been linked to the defence of the integrity and political stability of states. However, in recent decades, critical approaches have located the roots of insecurity in other issues – the unequal distribution of resources, discrimination based on sex or race, climate change, etc. Moreover, the traditional understandings of the discipline are often considered to aggravate insecurity, rather than resolve it. As a result, various alternative theories have been developed, opening new perspectives on security and the means needed to provide it.

The book An alternative security framework brings together these theories that are critical of security rooted in the armed violence of the state, reducing the distance between their approaches and developing a common ground for the transformation of security.

In this virtual Brown Bag Lunch discussion, the author Teddy Baker will present the so-called ‘alternative theories of security’ and explore how these theories are linked to innovative security practices. The presentation will be followed by a discussion among participants.
