Description

Conflicts arising from or resulting in self-determination claims based on identity or calls for self-government have for decades accounted for more than half of the world’s violent conflicts. Yet, there is limited recognition by policy makers and peacebuilding practitioners of the self-determination dimensions of these conflicts, let alone willingness to address some of the legal and political barriers to better understanding or preventing them.

EPLO and Conciliation Resources would like to invite you and colleagues to an informal conversation that will explore the distinct challenges in preventing and resolving conflicts arising from disputes over self-determination and provide insights into how they can be effectively navigated through peacebuilding and mediation support at different levels, in different spaces, and by a range of local and international actors.

Drawing on research on Mediating Self-determination Conflicts conducted by Conciliation Resources in partnership with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, participants will discuss the legal and political framework that often hampers – but also provides opportunities for – addressing drivers of conflict and crisis related to self-determination. Peace practitioners will then spotlight creative practice for more effectively addressing such conflicts, demonstrating what is possible even in seemingly intractable situations.

The conversation will be introduced by

  • John Packer, Director of the Human Rights Research and Education Centre and Neuberger-Jesin Professor of International Conflict Resolution in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa
  • Sally Holt, Head of Accord, Conciliation Resources
  • Tahir Aziz, Senior Adviser, South Asia, Conciliation Resources

The aim is to enable audience discussion and experience-sharing and to provoke thinking on actionable and practical approaches, strategies and tools for preventing and reducing key drivers of self-determination conflicts that meet the challenges of the evolving global political environment and mediation landscape.

RegistrationMandatory. Contact Carlotta Venza by Friday 28 June.
