EPLO Member Organisation Event: Lebanon’s forgotten crises – The role of the state, political movements and the international community

9th May 2023 @ 17:15 - 18:15 CEST

The situation in Lebanon has drastically deteriorated in the past few years. The majority of the population lives in poverty, the health care sector is crumbling, and public service provision is lacking. The national currency has lost more than 95 per cent of its value since 2019, people have lost their savings and the country is experiencing a massive exodus of skilled workers. Despite this dramatic humanitarian and economic situation the country is in the midst of a political stalemate with accusations of corruption and a general sense of impunity rife.

The panel discussion will focus on what is needed to help the country overcome the current situation in the short-, medium-, and long-term. Berghof Foundation will discuss necessary next steps to overcome the crises, who should be involved, and what options are available for moving forward. The event will examine the position of the state amid the catastrophic situation in the country, and will also look at the role of emerging political movements and the actions they have undertaken in an attempt to alleviate the impact of the crises on the population. Additionally, the potential role of the international community will be touched on.

This event is part of the #IntoFocus campaign which aims to shed light on the political, economic, and humanitarian crises in Lebanon.
