On Tuesday 4 April 2017, swisspeace is organising a roundtable with the participation of:
- Friederike Mieth (keynote), social and cultural anthropologist and a 2016/17 Research Fellow, Robert Bosch Academy
- Mithra Akhbari (discussant), Conflict Transformation and Gender Advisor, HEKS
While popularity of transitional justice as an academic field and community of practice continues to grow, the impact and effectiveness of transitional justice mechanisms is rather mixed. Proponents of transformative justice have therefore called for approaches that better tackle the underlying structural dynamics that led to the past injustice.
This roundtable will address this current debate on transformative justice, drawing insights from both South Africa and Sierra Leone. It will discuss the relationship between transitional justice and societal transformation, not only with regards to the choice and mandate of transitional justice mechanisms, but also the manner in which these processes are designed, implemented and talked about. It will explore how to shape a more context-sensitive, responsive and ‘sincere’ transitional justice practice.
