This side event aims to amplify the voices of Syrian victims’ groups in their struggle for truth, justice, and accountability and to highlight the urgency of the wide-scale legal, social, and psychological consequences arising from arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance in Syria.
It will provide an opportunity to discuss the manifold impacts of enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention in Syria, and strengthen comprehension of the extent and enduring nature of the double-victimization resulting from these crimes. The format of this side event is designed to encourage an informed exchange of ideas among involved stakeholders to discuss what can and should be done internationally, regionally, as well as nationally and come together around a set of strong and specific commitments for resolving the issue of arbitrary detention and disappearance in Syria, relying on participatory processes.
