The Community of Sant’Egidio is organising a round table entitled ‘Libya: challenges and opportunities for stabilization’ on Wednesday 12 July at the European Parliament in Brussels. The round table is hosted by MEP Elmar Brok.
The toppling of long-term leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 led to a power vacuum and instability, with no authority in full control. Several groups tried to gain power and to rule the country – or at least parts of it – or to establish transitional councils. Disorder, armed fights and instability were a consequence.
Against this backdrop, initiatives were taken to start political dialogue and reconciliation at the local and tribal level, leading to pacification and humanitarian support to the victims of the conflicts. More needs to be done.
Representatives of different political tendencies and civil society from the Eastern, Western and Southern parts of the country will explain the challenges met by the country and the opportunities for stabilizing and rebuilding the state from the grassroots.
The conference will be held in English and Arabic.
An official EU badge is needed to access the conference. If you need accreditation please send all of the following details to Celine Francis before Thursday 6 July 2017: full name, date of birth, nationality, ID or passport number (for Belgians: NOT the identification number of the National Register).
