UNESCO has long held that education is one of the essential pathways to building an enduring peaceful future for humanity. As we face an unprecedented influx of violently-displaced refugees and migrants into the EU, it is particularly crucial to reflect on how education contributes to peace. While recognising that education offers both support and an opportunity for holistic development to children directly affected by violent conflicts, it is also important to consider how education and schooling itself can be a site for a culture of peace and a process of cultivating peaceful qualities in individuals.
In this EPLO Brown Bag Lunch discussion, Dr Scherto Gill will address the following questions:
- How does education contribute to the well-being and integration of refugee youth?
- What is at the core of peace education for the EU? What are its defining attributes?
- How does the conception of peace influence the way we go about peace education?
Dr Scherto Gill is a Senior Research Fellow at the Guerrand-Hermès Foundation for Peace. Her research interests centre on understanding peace and human flourishing as a holistic and dynamic process. Dr Gill is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Sussex and a member of the Academic Friends of EPLO.
Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch and EPLO will provide tea and coffee.
Please RSVP to Susanne Wander if you would like to participate.
